Freeze warning in April?
Tonight I will teach and then go home and cover my plants since it may freeze for at least three hours!?! Not what we are used to here.. but we'll get through it.

Toad
Today a toad tried to come into our house.
It made it past the kitchen door before being escorted back on to the porch.

Raising your own Chickens for Fresh Eggs
This year for the first time I have had three different people ask for my help in getting a few chickens to raise in their backyard. I also had a young man raise his own ducks from eggs after he saw my baby ducks. I suppose it is a sign of hard economic times- and also the desire to live more in accordance with nature. Three of my local feed stores ran out of all the baby chicks that they had ordered in one day!!! That is most unusual. I am glad that people are more interested in not only the food that they eat and where it comes from, but also in living more economically.
So, since many people are asking about how to raise chickens-
Here are a few of my favorite links on raising chickens:

Baby Ducklings!
Geese eaten by wildcats
Sorry for the long delay in writing.
We have a big cat- as in wild cat-
a melanistic Floida panther, or cougar,
or something- about 70 lbs..
that has slowly killed all but one of our
white ebden geese(Pegasus).
The two African geese, Rex and Zulu are also left.
It has been heartbreaking to hear their screams as
they are carried off in the night.
Then see their half eaten bodies lying in the brush,
surrounded by their soft lovely feathers.
I hope that there is such as thing as
Goose heaven.

Cooler

It has started to get cooler in the evenings-
from the 50's to the 70'
so the chickens stopped laying..
The ducks started laying...
we bought some heat lamps and will warm up the chickens-
they usually like that.
The hummers are fewer at the feeders..
and the lightning bugs have started to glow down the hill.
A few gardenias are blooming and
we need to cut back the clematis on the camellias...
Much work to do in the garden before colder weather comes.
